The Chirk and District Welsh Group is celebrating a year since its formation back in Summer 2022, a full year of hosting fun activities and events for Welsh learners and speakers, a year of creating opportunities to speak and practise the Welsh language in the community and a year of hard work for a committee of enthusiastic members to ensure that the group and the Welsh language goes from strength to strength. <\/p>\n\n

Activities have included quiz nights, musical nights, guided walks, and several other social events. The year ended with a bus tour to visit Mary Jones’s World near Bala and the Owain Glynd\u0175r Centre in Machynlleth thanks to the Wales Community Foundation. Chairperson Glenys Jones said; <\/p>\n\n

\u201cWith a very enthusiastic committee we have been able to create numerous opportunities for speaking and practising Welsh for learners and others from the local area\u201d.<\/p>\n\n

As part of Menter Iaith\u2019s work to empower communities to implement projects for the benefit of the Welsh language, it has been a pleasure to support the hard-working crew here in Chirk to set up the committee, assist in making grant applications and provide support in organising events. We wish them all the best over the next year and for the future. <\/p>\n\n

The Menter Iaith has also been busy supporting other groups across the two counties visiting several groups of Welsh learners and speakers who are keen to take the next steps to formalise and create committees that will provide more opportunities to socialise in Welsh. If you attend a group and would like to know more about our work in supporting community committees, please get in touch. <\/p>\n\n
