A Celebration of Welsh Culture, Youth and Identity

A fantastic day was had in Flint on February 22nd  as pupils from local schools gathered for the town’s  early St. David’s Day celebration. Earlier than usual, the celebration which was also a celebration of Welsh Culture, Youth and Identity was held in Flint town centre, in front of St. Mary’s Church on Church Street and was arranged by Menter Iaith Fflint a Wrecsam in partnership with Flintshire County Council and Flint Town Council.

A performance from Band Cambria was followed by Welsh themed performances from local schools (Ysgol Gwynedd, CornistPark School, Ysgol Pen Coch, Ysgol Maes Hyfryd and Ysgol Croes Atti).  The celebrations were presented by Michael Ruggerio (‘Mic ar y Meic’). To bring the celebration to a close, everyone joined in singing Calon Lân and the National Anthem. The popular characters Magi Ann and Mr Urdd also joined in the celebrations!

Window Dressing Competition

The winners of the window dressing competition were also announced. This competition encourages the town’s business to decorate their windows on the theme of St David’s Day to celebrate all things Welsh. The Mayor came to this result:

1st- Nightingale House Hospice

2nd- Crefftau Cariad

3rd- Old Court Cafe

Gill Stephen, Chief Officer of Menter Iaith Fflint a Wrecsam said:

“It’s great every year to see so many local people coming out to watch the performances and join in the fun. The Saint David’s Day Celebrations are now established as a popular event in the town calendar. We look forward to seeing them continue to grow and continue to bring the community together in the future.

I would like to thank Flintshire County Council and Flint Town Council for their support which made the celebrations possible.  We are also grateful yet again to St Mary’s and St David’s Church for the warm welcome and practical help! It was also nice to have the company of the Mayor of Flint who announced the winners of the Window Dressing Competition and awarded the prizes.”
